How to Wear Slouch Socks: 7 Easy Looks
Slouch socks are the ones that bunch softly around the ankle instead of sitting flat against the leg. They are cut much longer than a normal crew sock, usually with a thick ribbed leg, so that when you push them down they gather into folds and stay there. They came out of 1980s aerobics studios, went quiet for twenty years, and are now everywhere again because they do something useful: they break up the line between a shoe and a leg, which makes an outfit look considered rather than thrown together.
Here are seven ways to wear them, and a few notes on keeping the slouch where you want it.
First, get the length right
A slouch sock only slouches if there is spare fabric. Ours are cut extra long on purpose, which is why the same pair can be worn pulled up tall like a knee-high or pushed down into a scrunch. If you are shorter, you will get more folds; if you are taller, the same sock may sit as a knee-high. That is normal and it is the point. Browse the range in slouch socks, or see everything tall in one place under slouch and knee high.
1. Sneakers, shorts and a scrunch
The easiest version. Low-top sneakers, running shorts or bike shorts, and a sock pushed down to sit just above the shoe. Keep the fold generous, about three or four inches, so it reads as deliberate. A white or ivory sock with white sneakers is the safe start; a bright color is what makes people ask where you got them.
2. Chunky boots and a short skirt
With a mini skirt or a short dress, pull the sock up higher and let it fold over the boot line. The block of color between hem and boot shortens the visible leg in a way that flatters most people, and it keeps the cold off your shins in autumn. Cream, black and dark green all sit well against black leather.
3. Over leggings
Slouch socks over leggings is the original 1980s look and it still works, particularly on the way to and from the gym. Pull the sock over the leggings hem rather than tucking the leggings in; the fabric bunches better on the outside. If you want a longer line, choose a color close to the leggings rather than a contrast.
4. Loafers and cropped jeans
The quietest way to wear them. Cropped or turned-up straight-leg jeans, a loafer or a mary jane, and a slouch sock pushed right down so only the folded cuff shows above the shoe. This is where a ribbed cotton sock earns its place over a thin dress sock: the texture reads clearly in the small gap between hem and shoe.
5. Layered over tights in winter
Tights first, then slouch socks over the top. It is warmer than either alone, and the two textures together look intentional. Match the sock roughly to the tights for a long line, or go the other way with an ivory sock over black tights.
6. Match the sock to something else
Pick up one color already in the outfit, whether that is a stripe in a shirt, a bag, or the sole of a shoe, and repeat it in the sock. Because our slouch socks come in more than twenty colors, this is usually a matter of picking, not compromising. If you like the idea but want options, the multi-pair packs in value packs cost less per pair than buying singles.
7. Just around the house
No styling required. A thick cotton slouch sock is a good house sock because there is enough fabric to keep your ankle warm without a slipper, and the loose top does not dig in while you are sitting down. The 6-pair pack of extra-long slouch socks exists mainly because people buy one pair and then want the rest of the week covered.
Keeping the slouch slouchy
Three things help. First, do not buy a size too small; a sock stretched tight has no spare fabric to fold. Second, set the fold with your hands after you put them on rather than letting them fall where they land, pushing the sock down in two or three deliberate pushes rather than one. Third, wash cool and skip the fabric softener. Softener coats the fibers and, over time, leaves the leg limp instead of springy.
Slouch or knee-high?
If you want the sock to stay up near the knee all day, a proper knee-high sock is cut for that job and has a ribbed elastic top to hold its position. If you want the folded, relaxed look, buy the slouch. Plenty of people keep both, and since every CasMarkt order ships free from our base in Texas with 30 days to return anything unworn, trying a pair of each is a low-risk way to find out which you actually reach for.
